If you’ve walked into a Wholefoods recently, you’ve probably felt a little overwhelmed by the milk section. Milk is milk, right? Well, there are quite a few different options these days. As someone whose body doesn’t love dairy milk, I had to look into some alternatives. I had heard of a few options, but I didn’t really know which ones were best for me. Looking into a few different options I discovered the benefits of non dairy milk and decided to share them with you.
Nut milk is one of the most popular non dairy milks. There is almond, hazelnut, cashew, and walnut just to name a few. These milks usually have a low calorie count and high in calcium and vitamin D. Unfortunately, nut milk is not great for those with nut allergies. It’s also best to find unsweetened versions of nut milk; otherwise, they might contain a high added sugar count.
Another popular alternative to cow milk is soy milk. Most people can consume soy milk without any problems. It’s great if you’re vegan or gluten-free. On the other hand, it does have more carbs and less protein than cow milk.
As far as flavor goes, coconut milk takes the cake. It’s lactose-free. Let’s not forget that it’s a good source for fiber and iron among a few other things. While coconut milk is the most delicious, it’s largely due to the fact that it’s high in fat and calories. The flavored coconut milks are high in sugar as well.
